What is Gastric Sleeve surgery?
The Gastric Sleeve procedure (Formally known as sleeve gastrectomy or Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG)) is performed using a few small laparoscopic (keyhole) incisions.
How does the Gastric Sleeve work?
The Gastric Sleeve procedure is successful due to several effective mechanisms all working together. Firstly, you will now be satisfied with much smaller portions of food and feel full earlier.

Is Gastric Sleeve right for me?
There are a few criteria used to determine suitability for Gastric Sleeve surgery. Our surgeons will consider your BMI (Body Mass Index) and in addition also consider the your overall health and any existing medical diagnoses. Our surgeons perform weight loss surgery on patients with a BMI of 35 and above. There are however exceptions. With a BMI of 30-34, our Bariatric Surgeons would discuss your particular concerns and any existing conditions (eg. Diabetes, sleep apnoea, arthritis, PCOS) with you in order to determine suitability for the procedure. Our reception team can provide general guidance on your suitability for surgery when speaking with you and give you clear advice on your wright loss surgery options.
Had bypass surgery with Dr Joseph and his team on 25/7/23 at East Sydney Private Hospital. From the first contact with the team Heather and Bianca, I felt at ease. Dr Joseph is so understanding and makes you feel at ease from the first consultation. Natasha the dietician was very easy to talk to and she provided me with all the tools and knowledge I needed to reach my surgery date with ease. My surgery date arrived and the team made me feel relaxed going in to theatre. I joked with the nurses after that I was sure dr Joseph just put me to sleep as he must have known I needed a good nap because honestly I felt great from the moment I woke up. Only had panadol for pain meds, I didn’t have any pain at all. I’m 4 days PO now and only feel a little bruised around the ribs but nothing that I need pain meds for. The hospital and staff were amazing also, so attentive and caring. I can’t thank the BodyFree team and East Sydney Hospital enough for everything, you are all amazing!

Preparing for Gastric Sleeve surgery
The Gastric Sleeve is now the most commonly performed bariatric surgery and brings an excellent balance of long term sustained weight loss, together with a great quality of life.
Post-Operative journey
Routine medications can be recommenced as directed in the post-operative phase. Any blood-thinning agents that patients were previously taking will also be recommenced as directed by the medical team.
Gastric Sleeve surgery program fees and inclusions
If you have Private Health Insurance that covers you for Bariatric Surgery (and this is your first bariatric procedure), the total out of pocket cost for our all inclusive program for Gastric Sleeve surgery is $3,750. With Medicare only cover (no Private Insurance), we offer uninsured programs (including surgery in a private hospital) with a total out of pocket cost for $13,490 for our basic program with limited follow up or $14,990 our all inclusive program. Our all inclusive programs include all surgery costs (including surgeon, anaesthetist and surgical assistant), two years of post operative care with our bariatric physician and surgeon, and pre and post operative consults will a dietitian. Please note, you would need to have a GP referral for both the surgeon and dietitian in order to claim the available Medicare rebates (and ensure costs remain as quoted).
