Dr David Joseph, Bariatric Surgeon

Dr David Joseph Medical Director, Bariatric Surgeon, Specialist Surgeon

Bariatric Surgeon Dr David Joseph has provided a comprehensive service for Bariatric patients for more than 10 years, and performs Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve), Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y and Single Loop) surgery, SADI-S and complex Revision Bariatric Surgery for the management of obesity problems. He is a highly trained Laparoscopic and Hepatobiliary Surgeon specialising in benign and malignant conditions of the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract, including the Liver, Stomach, and Pancreas.

He also manages common benign conditions using the most advanced laparoscopic techniques (keyhole surgery), including laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, and laparoscopic inguinal and incisional hernia repair.

Dr David Joseph studied Medicine at the University of Sydney and was awarded Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in 1996. He undertook training in General Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred and Concord Hospitals in Sydney, Australia and passed the Fellowship Examination of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2002, and was awarded FRACS in 2004. He then pursued further training in Surgical Oncology through 2004, and worked as The Surgical Superintendent at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 2005.

During this period he was able to pursue his interest and gain further training in complex Hepatobiliary Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. A fellowship in Liver Transplantation at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital was undertaken in 2006 with appointment as a Staff Specialist Surgeon in the latter half of the same year. This was continued until further advanced training was commenced overseas in July 2007 with a Fellowship in Transplantation Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. This high volume world renowned centre enabled further training in complex hepatobiliary surgery, living donor liver transplantation, and other aspects of transplantation surgery. Experience was also gained in advanced Bariatric Surgery during this period at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

After completing his fellowship, Dr David Joseph was appointed as a Visiting Medical Officer at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney in November 2008 where he currently works as an Upper Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, and Transplant Surgeon. In April 2010 he was also appointed as a Visiting Medical Officer at Concord Repatriation General Hospital, where he works as an Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon. He has also been a Visiting Medical Officer surgeon at the Mater Hospital in North Sydney since 2006, and was the Head of Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery there from 2013-2020.

Dr Robert Gandy - Bariatric Surgeon, BodyFree Clinic

Dr Robert Gandy Specialist Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon

Dr Robert Gandy is a specialist Laparoscopic Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at the Prince of Wales Public and Private Hospitals. He is a highly trained Laparoscopic and Hepatobiliary Surgeon specialising in benign and malignant conditions of the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract, including the Liver, Stomach, Oesophagus and Pancreas. Dr Gandy has a specialist interest in nutrition, Bariatric Surgery and the impact of surgery on lifestyle.

Dr Gandy is also a highly trained diagnostic and interventional endoscopist and has an interest in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and Upper GI cancer. In addition, he provides specialist laparoscopic treatments for abdominal wall hernia, hiatus hernia and gallstones.

Rob studied Medicine at the University of Leeds, in the United Kingdom and was awarded Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB) in 2002. He undertook basic training in General Surgery with the Yorkshire School of Surgery (UK) and becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He came to Sydney in 2006 and completed his surgical training and a Masters in Upper GI Surgery at the University of Sydney. Since then Dr Gandy has completed fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2015. He then completed further Upper GI and specialist Hepatobiliary fellowship at the Bankstown, Liverpool and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals.

After completing his fellowship, Dr Robert Gandy was appointed as a Visiting Medical Officer at Prince of Wales Hospital Sydney in February 2016 where he currently works as an Upper Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, and General Laparoscopic Surgeon. Dr Gandy is also a lecturer at the University of New South Wales and a lead researcher on multiple transitional research projects. Dr Gandy has worked alongside Dr David Joseph since 2017 at the Prince of Wales Private and Mater Hospitals and is very happy to join the team at the BodyFree clinic.

Natasha Leader, Bariatric Dietitian

Natasha Leader Dietitian

Natasha Leader is an experienced Accredited Practising Dietitian and has spent a wealth of time in a variety of different settings including tertiary care hospitals, private practice and in the rural community.

Natasha has a great deal of experience in the care of patients with weight management issues, particularly those undergoing obesity surgery. She also specialises in the management of diabetes and gestational diabetes, and is a qualified diabetes educator. A lot of her work is in the antenatal area - helping women optimise their health before, during and after their pregnancies. In addition to these specialist areas Natasha also has years of experience in other specialty areas including gastroenterology, organ transplant and cancer services.

As well as time spent with patients and clients, Natasha is also involved at times in various research projects and provide education sessions for general practitioners and other health professionals. She also resides as ‘in-kitchen dietitian’ for www.gestationaldiabetesrecipes.com which is a world-first site providing information, support and recipes for women with gestational diabetes.

Mark Porter Anaesthetist

Dr Mark Porter is a consultant anaesthetist working at the Royal Prince Alfred, Mater and North Shore Private Hospitals. He gained his medical degree from the University of Cape Town, South Africa in 1997, commenced his anaesthetic training in the UK and completed it in Australia, becoming a fellow of both the Royal College of Anaesthetists (UK) and the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in the process. His anaesthetic training has included fellowships in cardiac anaesthesia and aeromedical retrieval medicine.

Mark has been working closely with Dr Joseph since 2011 and they have accrued a wealth of experience doing complex upper gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and liver transplant cases together. His other areas of interest are in bariatric anaesthesia and postoperative pain management.

Mark is currently supervisor of anaesthetic training at RPA and gets a lot of enjoyment out of teaching anaesthetic trainees and medical students.

When he is not working he enjoys spending time with his family, playing the piano, listening to music, getting outdoors and cooking.

Heather joined the BodyFree Weight Loss Clinic team in 2017 following a 25 year career in the Media industry working in Management and Administrative roles. Heather feels that working in the Medical industry has been a welcome change, helping people to improve their lives and seeing them transform not only physically, but also emotionally, has been such a pleasure to witness and also a rewarding experience.

In addition to her Practice Management responsibilities, Heather has become something of an office ‘Ms Fix-It’ person – the go to person for the team on all things and also assists with patient co-ordination and communications.

The wonderful Bianca is the first person you’ll see when you visit the BodyFree Weight Loss Clinic. Bianca is supportive and welcoming and will go out of her way to provide the best service and care to our patients and our staff.

Bianca brings a wealth of experience to the team having worked in medical offices (Ophthalmology and Ocular Plastics) for 20 years as a Practice Manager. She joined Dr Joseph’s offices and the BodyFree team in 2013 and has been an invaluable member of the team ever since.
